The Quantum Technology business unit formed in 2002 works on the realisation of a marketable coding system, which is based on the principles of quantum cryptography. Apart from quantum cryptography a further remit for the business unit is the implementation of the mathematical methods of quantum physics, in order to develop algorithms for pattern recognition, image processing or signal processing.

Conventional coding procedures are based on mathematical foundations, which can be solved by large-scale, high-performance computing systems. These procedures will become obsolete with the availability of the quantum computer. The codes can then be decoded in shortest time. The Gartner Group expects that starting from 2006 a need for new, highly-secure coding procedures will exist. Quantum cryptography is based on the laws of nature instead of mathematics. That makes it absolutely tap-proof. Prominent brains around the world are working on the economic realisation. Austria is involved at the cutting edge.

In the context of a feasibility study the current state of the basic research in the area of quantum computer science and quantum technology in Austria was analysed regarding its economic practicability. A Roadmap is to secure a leading role for Austrian research and industry.

In this trend-setting research area an outstanding success was obtained in 2004: The Integrated Project (IP) SECOQC (Development of a Global Network for Secure Communication based on Quantum Cryptography) was submitted and approved under the leadership of the business unit in the Sixth Framework Program of the European Union. With SECOQC the last hurdles are to be overcome for a successful introduction on the market.
