Convergence of VMM

Scattering at a metalic rib atop a GaAs/AlGaAs waveguide:

• Excitation of a surface-plasmon in TM-polarization
• Excitation of scattered radiating waves
• High index contrast

Numerical challenges:

• Hard to simulate with "classical" approaches (e.g., conventional mode-matching fails)
• VMM with localized shape functions: excellent convergence in TE- and good performance in TM-polarization
• Further improvement possible with h-refinement!
