Transforming information hidden in databases into usable knowledge becomes increasingly important due to the rapidly growing volume of data. Improving the interpretability of and search for information is a fundamental challenge of modern information technologies.

DME is carrying out research on generation and management of semantic metadata as well as semantic search of multimedia content.

Multimedia-based data is managed in different systems and data sources. Such data is often difficult to access and most systems do not support integrated searching across different data types. DME is developing interoperable solutions for integrating content from diverse systems which provides the basis for uniform cross-organisational semantic search mechanisms.
